Jonathan Edelstein, Lucian Buscemi and Julian Bennett Holmes are Fiasco, a Brooklyn trio formed in 2005. Their upcoming instrumental album, Native Canadians, the follow up to 2007's God Loves Fiasco, will be released in summer '08 on Impose Records. Known for their chaotic live shows and technical proficiency, they've been described as a mix of punk, noise, and math rock, and have traveled to Austin for SXSW and as far as Bosnia for the Sarajevo Film Festival. However, their favorite places to play are people's houses.

It never ceases to amaze us how many amazing bands are flying under the radar around here, rising to great heights and slinking back into the darkness before anyone has time to notice. The Killer Whales have been moving crowds since 2004—making an inspired and funky racket at all the usual rock clubs and gallery/loft spaces without attracting too much attention—and only have one self-released EP out so far. With groove-heavy inspirations like War, the Wailers and Fela Kuti running through their minds, the Whales are unique for attacking their instruments with the mind-set that they're members of a tribe on a desert island, entrusted with entertaining the imaginary clan. The tribe vibe was in full effect at their recent show at the Shape Shop, where they got shirtless, sweaty and twitchy with relentless rhythmic pounding courtesy of percussionist Cameron Brand and drummer Harry Brenner. With Travis Murphy's falsetto vocals swooping in like a mash-up of the Muppets and early Police, he's eerily reminiscent of a young Sting, with his spiky blonde 'do and spot-on fretless bass playing. —Ben Taylor, Time Out Chicago
