Tick Tick Booking is entering retirement

04.17.09

Dear everyone,
Tick Tick Booking is officially entering retirement.
Please join us on Monday, April 27 at the Monkey House for our final show and going away party, featuring Son of Salami, Black Feelings, Ponytail, Think About Life, and DJs Drew Stock and Mike Device.
When we started booking bands in Burlington three years ago, our vision was to bring the music we wanted to see and the city we love together.  Burlington’s location in the northeast made it seem sensible to ask our favorite bands to stop here.  And they did, and people started showing up to see them, and we kept asking bands that said yes, and so we asked our dream bands, and they said yes too.
We are proud to have connected Vermont to so many other places through our shows, and we are grateful that we’ve been able to experience so many wonderful happenings with you all, as Burlington develops a fuller and more viable underground music scene.
The three of us are looking forward to relaxing and moving on to other projects.  Nick Mavadones will continue to be the lighthouse of Burlington music on his blog, (AngioplastyMedia.wordpress.com) and will try to maintain regular sleeping hours.  Julia Lewandoski is ghost-writing a novel and gardening.  Dale Donaldson II is drawing and giving drawing lessons to a nine-year-old, and considering art school.  Graham Keegan will continue to run Tick Tick Printing as a business and is thinking of moving to La-La-Land.
We consider everyone that has played music, designed something, done a thankless job, hung posters, told someone to come, carried a PA, let us borrow stuff, promoted us on the radio, let us use their space, hosted a band, never came but said something nice, paid extra at the door, paid at the door, bought t-shirts, or just showed up, a part of Tick Tick.  So thank you.

We would like to thank, first, EVERYONE, and then this short list:

Stereo Warm-up comes downtown, plus a word to those under 21

10.29.08

We’re very excited to report that our annual dance party, Stereo Warmup, happily ensconsed at the Monkey House on the last Saturday of every month, is expanding, and coming to Club Metronome on the first Friday of every month!  So that’s next Friday, November 7th!!  We’re really excited about the new spot and time, and hope that you all will come out and dance in both places.  If you’ve never been, you can expect Tick Tick’s official DJ Mike Device to play some bangers, and more recently, plenty of disco, and you can expect to find people dancing.

Here’s the stereo warmup blog. If you’re lucky you can get your greedy paws on a Mike Device mixtape.

Both parties are FREE if you are over 21+.  If you are 18-21, it’s $5.

I know, I know.  We here at Tick Tick all went to many a show before age 21, and so we make an effort not to ever do 21+ shows if we can help it.   We all feel grateful for the many wonderful venues that are inclusive, including these, who could just as well make things 21+ and leave it at that.

So, if our shows get more successful, hopefully we can get that cap off of there.  Alternately, if you know a great, alternative space to have a dance party, LET US KNOW!

And in the meantime, we feel you, and we’re working on it.

They are gonna blow up! Come check them out at Burlington’s most figuratively and literally speaking “underground” venue before they only play places like higher ground !!

Take a listen to my favorite track Black Rice:

It’s like a mixtue of eveything awesome happening in LA with a little bit of the Zombies and Beach Boys thrown in for good measure.

Fresh site! Though not so fresh taste in my mouth….weird fish.

Then, later in the morning, a kick-ass (but foul-tasting) launch party from Paaaaris….

Memories of Summer

09.21.08

At my “other” job, we have some lovely neighbors who like to bring in saltwater taffy for all the staff to “enjoy” at the end of the summer. They leave it, in its little box, on the table, with a little folded sign, on which is written in a beautiful old-lady script, “Memories of Summer.” So I’m trying to post up some of the gazillions of pictures from Tick Tick’s summer of shows, which was crazily busy and awesome.

We had an amazing dance party in a gutted out apartment, featuring the brilliance of Heartthrobz.

It was really hot in there

The Vacant Lots also played that night — they are awesome and you can see them this Friday, the 26th, at the Monkey House.

Celebrity DJ The Small is Beautiful played a celebrity set at the Monkey House, and the next morning, baked some chicken at my house.

While you may have formerly known him as J’aime Tambeur, drummer for the Unicorns, in truth he is a dance phenomenon with a blog. Catch him in Europe! He was also a very nice person who did a one-off for us, and all this from the member of a band who was really a LEGEND to me in their time.

The Mae Shi came to Metronome and rocked it pretty hard.

But not before Heartthrobz lathered up the crowd into a screaming frenzy. The Mae Shi expressed a desire to have Heartthrobz open all of their shows.

Tick Tick and some friends endeavored to have a Community Garden Plot at Rock Point. Then, they go busy and it rained for three weeks. Still, we grew some stuff.

Do you rip down Tick Tick posters?

09.16.08

If you rip down Tick Tick posters and put them up in your living room, and then feel guilty about it, feel better by joining our new POSTER SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE!

We’re still working out the details, but beginning October 1, we’ll be offering a quarterly subscription service. For $50, you’ll receive a tube in the mail with ten or more limited edition, hand screen printed posters, signed and numbered. You will get posters, other art prints, who knows what else we might throw in the tube!

The first selling point here is that while the posters you ripped down are on crappy newsprint, these are on lovely, archival-quality poster paper. Someday, you might be able to sell them on e-bay for way more!

The second selling point is that money from poster subscriptions goes directly to support Tick Tick’s booking work. Tick Tick booking is a labor of love, which is a nice way of saying that it doesn’t make any money. Because we book in alternative venues (which we love to do) and don’t charge high ticket prices (because we don’t want to), and because gas is expensive, and because we want to book bands who aren’t wildly famous, it is very very hard to make any sort of money at the door at a show.

The money from your subscription will go towards buying poster paper for these lovely show posters, towards paying off the new PA that we bought this summer (which is what allows us to do shows in alternative venues and have them sound ok), enable us to pay every band we book a reasonable amount of money, and give us the flexibility to take chances on bands that are a little bit more expensive than we can normally afford. And those are the shows that could totally BLOW YOUR MIND!

Soon there will be more details and a little paypal button up on the webby for you. And don’t forget to come to the shows too. All we really want is to enjoy some excellent music from out of town, in your company! Check our shows page for all the details on the upcoming.
